New Year’s Day Fly 2026

Ziggy here…

It’s an odd feeling to write so little about the Annual New Years Day fly. The day before, we celebrated the annual fighter kite competition, click here to read about it. With rain being present all weekend. Many fliers who planned to attend, felt the need to stay home. I encouraged people to stay out of the rain unless they insisted upon getting out. January 1st showed us very little to no rain but conditions were light throughout the morning and afternoon. On the scene at Robb Athletics field was Robert and Carol Freed, James (Flash) Quinby, Glenn Meader, Erin Quinn, Rod Treece, Mike, the Smith Family (Nick, Cass and kids), Vice President Dave (Niterider) Soutar and myself. The day before I was sporting a beard and shaved that night. When I got to the field, James didn’t recognize me. Being that we just met the day before, it made for a good chuckle. The pot luck was cancelled but a couple of members brought good eating anyhow. Glenn and Erin, thank you for being so warm hearted and considerate. You both fed the bunch of us and I won’t forget it.

This day was planned to be very eventful with loads of activities. Believe me when I say, this day was extremely important to me. I had prepared so much for our members, the community and visitors traveling from afar. Although my master plan was halted. I feel really good about the San Diego Kite Clubs future.  Several plans are being push forward to the January 10th meetup & meeting. I will share a little about what would have taken place if the weather didn’t hurt our attendance.

– Fly kites
– Our permit to fly at Robb Athletics filed was set for 11:00 am until 4:00 pm. Anticipating large attendance, the club funded for a porta potty and sink for our guests and club members to have extra amenities on the scene. This small courtesy meant a lot to me. It may seem silly but I really appreciated the club providing extra conveniences for everyone.
– This event features a pot luck which always provides ample food, drinks and treats. I planned to bring a large quantity of horchata for everyone to drink. Yum, I can taste it now.
– Speech & Meeting at 12:30. Consisting of an introduction, group exercise, recent happenings, member appreciation spotlight, knew things to come and some surprises throughout the meeting I can’t spoil at this time.
– A very important club vote would take place following the meeting. This would consist of club members voting on how to spend club funds on 7 different items. We have been preparing for this since September and I look forward to voting myself at the next meetup.
– Silent Auction on 16 different items consisting of kites donated form Gail Lindsay, Jolly Roger, Ziggy and some special pieces recovered from Ben Dantonio’s collection.
-Fly kites and fly some more.

Here is the flyer we sent out to the flying community

In the near future, another article will be released detailing the results of our club’s vote on fund expenditures. There are many exciting things to come. I encourage all readers to pay close attention to the “New Stories” tab on our website. I have so much to share and although this isn’t the right time for it. Pay close attention to all new articles coming out this first quarter of the new year. Incredible generosity from a few past members is going to push us far down the road. I won’t say more until the right time but know it’s coming very soon.

Happy New Year to everyone.  Wishing you all health, family, friends and togetherness. Go fly now!
