Getting To Know Your Board Members
Dave Soutar – Vice President
I have been flying kites since I was a child, but a usual, life took its normal course. We went up to visit our grown children where my youngest asked if I would like to go with here and fly she had a pretty little delta! I said sure! this was in the pandemic so it took a while to find a kite for myself to fly (pilot) after a little searching I found an old kite shop with a number on the door, “call if you need a kite” gave a call, and in a little while I was a proud owner of a red “grateful dead” colored foil. the whole family walked over to the park to fly. I was hooked all over again. After our visit with my children, my wife said to me that she had found the San Diego Kite Club on the web and that I should join, dropped in on a few Saturday flies. So I joined the old fashion way pen, paper and check! Love to Fly!
Rick Spurgeon – Advisor to the Board
My oldest T-Shirt says I have been flying and been a club member since 1998. I started flying when my kids were small. They got bored and I didn’t. Maybe the grandkids will do better. I fly many kinds of kites: Single Line, Dual Line, Quad Line, Fighters, Indoor, Outdoor, My own and Other Peoples. I also do some Kite Aerial Photography. I fly store bought and home made kites. I am the master of none but I fly for fun.
Ziggy Santa Maria – President
I started flying in 2023 because of Ray Miller flying a 12 stack of Hyperkites in Oceanside, San Diego CA. Instantly got the kite bug and followed Ray Millers orders to go into Kite Country and visit owner Victor Heredia. I purchased my very first kite from Victor. He recommended me to attend a San Diego Kite Club fly. My first meetup with the club was filled with learning and meeting people. I saw Don Fox flying a quad line revolution kite and purchased one just a couple months later. I now enjoy all things kiting including controllable single line kites, dual line, quad line, etc. I truly love being apart of this club, hanging with members of our kiting fellowship and helping the club grow. I was elected president recently and with great pride. I hope to help many people find kiting and help those that already fly, enjoy it even more.
Erin Quinn – Equipment Manager
I’m happy to be the new equipment manager for SDKC and would like to extend an invitation to all club members who are inclined to make kites for non-commercial use to take advantage of SDKC donated materials by visiting the Kite Builders Corner. Come visit the kite studio in Leucadia to see SDKC inventory, get inspired and start building today.
I come from a family of makers, my dad and brother built the little sailboats we grew up sailing, and my mom made the sails. Later my brother manufactured our windsurfing sails and when we traveled for windsurfing, we always also packed kites.
I knew I wanted to be a kite maker when on a surf trip to Bali in the 90’s, every evening the sky was full of kites, and every morning people were quietly building them on their porches. One afternoon we were stuck in a terrible traIic jam, inching along the only highway, and when we reached the source of the obstruction it was revealed to be a group of men carrying a large and heavy bamboo kite frame that spanned the entire road. Instead of being irritated by the impediment, the people passing by were cheering and encouraging the kite makers. I joined SDKC in 2024 because I wanted to learn to make kites. I am very grateful for all their support, having access to the building materials as a club member has given me a lot of freedom to learn and to experiment. Fernando Vazquez – Web Master
Fernando keeps the SDKC website running with the precision of a NASA launch team and the patience of a saint. We’re pretty sure he can fix the internet with one hand while flying a kite with the other. If the website works, thank Fernando; if it doesn’t, please give him a moment to recover from everyone asking him why.
Glenn Meader – Web Master
I’ve been a kite collector since age 12. People didn’t know what to get me for Xmas and birthday presents so I asked for kites. So my collection includes all those kites for 6 decades. I don’t have a favorite style – I like variety – and colors. I love kites more than computers, but I’m skilled with both.
Don Fox – Treasurer
Don is our Treasurer, which means he bravely guards the club’s money from hungry kite enthusiasts, unnecessary purchases, and Ziggy. His accounting skills are so good that he can find a missing dollar from 300 feet away while flying a quad-line kite. If the numbers add up, Don did it; if they don’t, we are confident the wind did it.
David Corning – Advisor to the Board
David serves as an Advisor to the Board, which means he possesses the rare ability to make everyone think we actually know what we’re doing. His wisdom, experience, and impeccable advice are invaluable, especially when the rest of us are standing around arguing about kites. We’re not saying he knows everything, but we’re also not brave enough to disagree with him.
Dan Willan – Founder & Advisor to the Board
Dan is our Founder, which means that without him, the San Diego Kite Club would be just a bunch of people staring at the sky wondering what happened. As an Advisor, he continues to provide the wisdom of someone who has seen every kite, every wind condition, and probably every questionable decision this club has ever made. Basically, Dan is SDKC’s Yoda—only with more kites and fewer cryptic sentences.
