On September 2, 2025, Laura and I had the incredible opportunity to fly kites in one of the most breathtaking and historic locations we’ve ever visited—below the iconic El Morro, or Castillo San Felipe del Morro, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As members of the San Diego Kite Club, we’ve flown kites in many beautiful places, but this experience was something truly special. The combination of history, culture, and the perfect kite-flying conditions made it a day we’ll never forget.
The History of El Morro and Its Kite-Flying Tradition
El Morro is a fortress that has stood guard over San Juan Bay for centuries. Built by the Spanish in the 1500s, it was designed to protect the city from invaders. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved landmarks. Standing there, you can feel the weight of history in every stone, and the views of the Atlantic Ocean are absolutely stunning.
What makes El Morro even more special is the Esplanade, the wide, grassy lawn that stretches out below the fortress. For generations, this space has been a favorite spot for kite flying. The steady trade winds that blow in from the ocean and the wide-open space make it perfect for kites. Families, tourists, and kite enthusiasts alike gather here to enjoy the simple joy of watching kites dance in the sky. It’s a tradition that’s as much a part of San Juan as the fortress itself.
Our Kite-Flying Adventure
When Laura and I arrived at El Morro, we were immediately struck by the beauty of the place. The fortress loomed above us, a reminder of the island’s rich history, while the ocean breeze carried the scent of salt and adventure. We couldn’t wait to get our kites in the air.
We brought along a couple of our favorite kites—bright, colorful designs that we knew would stand out against the blue sky. As soon as we launched them, the steady winds off the Atlantic lifted them effortlessly. Watching them soar high above the Esplanade, with the fortress as a backdrop, was absolutely magical. It felt like the perfect blend of history and the present moment.
What made the experience even more special were the people. As our kites danced in the sky, locals and tourists alike stopped to watch. Some came over to chat, asking about our kites and sharing their own memories of flying kites at El Morro. It was a wonderful reminder of how something as simple as a kite can bring people together, no matter where you’re from.

As members of the San Diego Kite Club, we’ve always believed that kite flying is more than just a hobby—it’s a way to connect with people and places.
