Saturday, June 13th San Diego Kite Club Meetup

Date: Saturday June, 13th
Event Location: Coronado Cays Park (Subject to change towards Robb Athletics Field)
Time: 12pm to 4pm but stay as long as you like
Theme: Dog Days of Summer is an annual them and it made the cut this year. Fly a dog of a kite, an ugly kite, a terrible flying kite and any kite that features a dog on it. No need to play along with the theme. We just want to see you and flying whatever makes you happy.
Extra Notes: Please keep an eye on our club website for any last-minute location changes. We will also post updates on our Facebook and Instagram pages. In rare cases, an update may be posted the morning of the meetup, so be sure to check for updates before heading out.

Sunday June 7th, Civita Kite Festival – Sudberry Properties

The annual Civita Kite Festival is a really charming day of flying in our local community. They have generously provided us with a $1,000 donation for the past two years and will be contributing again this year. We have the volunteers needed for this festival. There is some light assembly involved, but overall it’s a very relaxed and enjoyable day. The volunteers we should all cheer on are listed below.

Volunteer List – Eric Olaes, Don Fox, Diane Spurgeon, Rick Spurgeon, Karen Froehner (Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach), Skip Walton, Ziggy (with wife Cristina and the kite club kids)
Date: Sunday, June 7th
Event Duration: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: 7960 Civita Blvd, San Diego, CA 92108
Volunteer Description:
We will arrive around 11:00 AM to begin assembling basic diamond-shaped kites. Attendees typically begin arriving at 1:00 PM, at which point we’ll start distributing kites. For the past two years, lunch has been provided, and we can expect the same this year from what I heard.

Sunday, June 28th at The Huntington “This Land Is” Event

I promised to talk more about this event at a later date during our club meeting on May 9th. Well, that time has come. The Huntington up in LA is hiring the San Diego Kite Club to fly on their east lawn for $3,000.00. Even better, it comes with some pretty awesome perks. We get free lunch and tickets to come back to the Huntington for one of their special events. We have extra tickets provided as well that we can gift away. Once again, the volunteers we should all cheer for are listed below.
Volunteer List – Don Fox, Monica Fox, Diane Spurgeon, Rick Spurgeon, Ray Miller, Ziggy, Robert Freed, Carol Freed, Vernon White, Shawn Farrow, Mark Quirmbach, Amy and Guy Butrum.

Date: Sunday, June 28, 2026
Event Duration: Please arrive no later than 9:45 AM and we fly from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens located at 1151 Oxford Rd, San Marino, CA 91108

Volunteer Description:
Our goal is to bring out 10 pilots, with an absolute minimum commitment of 8 pilots required. In addition, I’ll have 2 backup pilots on standby in case someone unexpectedly has to withdraw. We’ll be flying on the East Lawn inside a roped-off flight area. There are no obligations to provide lessons, interact with guests, or actively work the crowd. However, we are welcome to do a little crowd engagement using Hyperkite tails and quad-line kites if desired. This will be a fun fly for our club and a cool trip north.

The Big Job

We secured a big job, and it’s a big win for the club. The San Diego Kite Club continues to build strong momentum by turning a shared passion for kite flying into meaningful fundraising that supports our future. A small group of members will deliver a professional performance over three nights, generating over $6,650 for the club. Performers are generously volunteering their time, with compensation provided to support their participation and ensure a high-quality presentation.

This success reflects a true team effort, powered by dedicated volunteers and talented pilots. It’s also the result of consistent behind-the-scenes work to create these opportunities, with Ziggy playing a key role in building connections and maintaining that momentum.

Ziggy has coordinated the performance team through months of planning, ensuring a high level of professionalism throughout. He has also expanded the opportunity by facilitating partnerships that create added value for those involved.

Through these efforts, Revolution has produced 10 custom kites for the three-day event, while José Sainz has been contracted to design and build a custom Rokkaku advertising piece. These collaborations strengthen the overall presentation while creating additional revenue opportunities and professional exposure for members of the San Diego Kite Club, resulting in a mutually beneficial outcome for both the club and the broader kite community. We also flew in Scott Wieder from Team Kite Life to help lead as team captain for the quad line 4 person team segmet of our performance.

Flying performance team:

Quad Line 6 Stack — Don Fox (Region 12 Director of the AKA and club treasurer)
Quad Line 4-man Team — Scott Weider (Team Captain and leader) / Joe Hadzicki (The Inventor) / Mark Quirmbach (O’side badass and competitive flyer) / Ziggy (Another SDKC club member)
Hyperkite 12 Stack  Ray Miller (Hawaii’s Hyperkite Team Elite)
Single Line Display — Rick Spurgeon (Club member with the middle name FUN)
Ground Crew — Shawn Farrow, Robert Freed, Carol Freed and Diane Spurgeon, Eric Olaes and Jose Sainz
We will try to cover most of this in our next in person meeting. We will celebrate together with a round of high fives.
Happy flying out there and thanks for keeping up with what’s up.
